Just over a week ago we witnessed the tragic killing of George Floyd here in our hometown of Minneapolis. That moment sent shockwaves through communities across the nation, and also around the world. It is the latest in a series of incidents unjustly targeting Black Americans – shameful violence that has been normalized by centuries of institutionalized racism, discrimination and oppression.
I cannot find words to explain what’s happening, and I do not have all the answers about what should come next. This is a time to support and listen to each other and seek to understand how our experiences and perspectives may be different.
This is a moment of reckoning and all of us have a role to play. I do know that silence is not an option.
The groundswell of civil unrest across the country makes it clear that the complicated work of dismantling systemic racism will require the commitment, not just of the brave individuals we’ve seen standing up for change over the past week, but of all of our citizens, our institutions, our government and yes, also our business community.
I’d like to reaffirm where we stand as a company. Bright Health unequivocally condemns racism, discrimination, and all behaviors that undermine the humanity of people of color. We expect every human being to be treated equally and with dignity. It’s also a time for our Bright Health team to renew our commitment to living our values and making a difference for the people and the communities that we serve.
We know that we have a long way to go and the work won’t be easy. But all of us at Bright Health take our responsibility seriously – to fulfill on our mission to make healthcare right. Together. Today it’s more important than ever that we come together to work toward a more just and inclusive society.
